Do You Have a Large Space to Monitor? Try This.
A good many years ago I worked in the security industry and since then I’m shocked at how little people know about CCTV, and even distrust it. However, I know that doesn’t apply to you otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this now.
So, instead of babbling on let’s get on with what you can expect to get for your money with this 8 channel 8 camera security system.
First of all, I will say this system is probably more suited to the home than a business simply because of the camera quality. However, it’s a very nice starter kit for those of you that want to protect say, a store or warehouse and don’t have the money to spend on a high-end system.
With that out of the way, I’m going to move on to some of the features this video surveillance system has.
The hard drive you get is 500GB and this will give you the ability to continually record for up to one week from all 8 cameras. It also uses H.264 compression which is one reason why you can record non-stop for so long, plus this helps with the overall quality of the images you capture. It will record in real-time at 30 frames per second which is easily fast enough so you don’t miss anything important.
If using storage is an issue for you, it is possible to set the cameras up so they only record when motion is detected, and the manufacturer has thoughtfully added a feature to block out certain areas so the camera isn’t set off by things that may move in the field of vision that don’t need recording.
You can even set up scheduled recording times which is very useful if you only use the system when you’re not at your business premises or home. This also means that if you have experienced criminal activity and you have an idea of when it might occur again, you can catch them “in the act” next time around.
What you have to remember here is this system provides you with no less than 8 cameras which use a PTZ (pan, tilt and zoom) system. For anyone reading this review who knows about CCTV systems, you will already have an idea of how much a camera like this can cost on its own. So, please bear this in mind as you read on.
The cameras can be mounted indoors or outdoors and will record both night and day. Whilst the images you receive during the day are of a quality that may surprise you (considering the price), don’t expect too much in the way of long distance focus at night. After about 20 feet, you will more than likely get the outline of a person or object rather than a detailed image. For example, you will be able to tell that someone is wearing jeans and sneakers, but you won’t get facial detail. The same goes for things like being able to read license plates. One other point to mention here is the cameras will auto focus, and this cannot be overridden so what you get is what the system decides for you.
This is not for the faint hearted. Installing the cameras won’t be an issue for those of you that have a little wiring knowledge and know how to use a drill. To be honest, this is where ease of installation stops. The manual provided with this video surveillance system is, to say the least, pretty useless. However, I have discovered there are some great YouTube videos that will help you with this.
(Otwin – maybe we could find one and have the link here. Everyone seems to complain about this?)
You will also have to network the system which involves some knowledge of the internet and computers in general. Whilst it’s not impossible to install on your own, if you’re new to this type of system I suggest you get a professional in to help you.
You can connect this CCTV system to the internet, so this means you can get live footage when you’re not with the monitor. It’s compatible with many mobile devices so it doesn’t matter where you are, you can still keep an eye on things.
Plus, if your cameras are set for motion detection you’ll receive an email when movement is detected. You can view the cameras in quad format at the same time and this can be done from a TV or PC monitor.
There may be negatives included in this review but I’m not about to tell everyone you’ll get something utterly fantastic when it isn’t. However, if you still have an open mind (and I hope you do), take the time to look at the price on Amazon. You can get all 8 cameras and everything else you need for less than it costs to buy a high-end DVR on its own!
