SVAT CV502-4CH-002 Security System Review

Are You Looking For a DIY Security System – Look No Further!

When I mention security systems to people they generally think I’m talking about alarms, but when I tell them its video surveillance I’m interested in (and think they should be too), eyes tend to glaze over slightly. I do find this pretty frustrating, but that’s probably because I’ve worked in this industry and have seen the benefits CCTV can bring.

That’s one of the reasons I’ve decided to add the SVAT CV502-4CH-002 Web Ready 4 Channel system to my website. What might interest you most (which is why I mention it first) is price. Sure, you can find cheaper surveillance systems on the market (although not many), but the main aim with this one is that you don’t need to reach for the yellow pages to book an installation engineer which adds to the cost.

So, with this in mind let’s start this review with just that.

Installation

There isn’t a great deal to say here except that the manufacturer has taken into consideration that most people don’t have the time (or money) to spend on a CCTV system and pay to have it installed.
The 4 cameras which are included do have to be wired in and if you have a bit of DIY knowledge that shouldn’t be an issue.

The DVR (more about that below) uses a “plug and play” system for connecting everything up, and it’s very clear what you need to do. Just follow the on-screen instructions and you’re away. The only problem some of you might come across is setting up the remote access since this system is compatible with both Blackberry and iPhone. However, you do benefit from the interactive coaching menu which is always there to help, and customer service are said to be very helpful if you need them.

The DVR

As with many video surveillance systems, you get 500GB of memory on the hard drive which means you can easily record up to 1 month’s worth of footage even if you’re recording continuously.

You can connect to a television or monitor from the DVR so you can view live or recorded images, however, the one downside to this is you can only view from one at a time. This means that if you want to have it connected to a monitor upstairs and one downstairs, this system won’t accommodate that (if this is important to you, you should check this system).

The Cameras

As said, you get 4 cameras with this system and the way these have been designed makes them perfect for hard to see places around your home. For example, you could have one installed on an entrance, one on an exit and still have room to cover a parking area and your driveway.

What’s best about this CCTV system and its cameras is how well the night vision works. In fact, I will go so far as to say that what looks completely dark to the naked eye will show up on your screen. But, as with all low priced systems like this you do have to think about distance (you might find that you can see someone is where they shouldn’t be but not who).

All the cameras are professional grade weather resistant and will automatically move from day to night recording without any intervention from you.

Other Benefits

Other benefits worth mentioning are that the DVR uses H.264 compression which helps with saving memory and producing better quality recorded images. Everything you need including mouse, cables remotes etc come with the overall package.

Searching recordings is also as “easy as pie” because you can do this by entering a date, time or event. There are many other little features included like password protection, customized camera displays and multiple back-up options (to name but a few).

In Conclusion

Try as I might to find something really negative to say about this system, I found it pretty difficult whilst I was doing my research. For the price, which incidentally you can find here at Amazon, I think this video surveillance system is great for those of you who don’t need the hassle of a large and complicated installation and just want to make sure no-one is “skulking” around your property when they shouldn’t be.
